Nisbet Homestead Farm
Background
The homestead was constructed by Matthew Nisbet who immigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1818. In 1841 Nisbet came to DeKalb County, Paw Paw Township, and constructed a two tale log cabin, a short term residence he lived in whilst he built Aged Stone Property. The property is produced of ten by four feet blocks of stone which were hauled from Ottawa through ox cart. Nisbet’s property took fifteen several years to build and has remained in the Nisbet household considering that its completion.

The National Register listing for the Nisbet Homestead Farm is composed of 10 contributing “homes” on the 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land. These various homes arise in 3 groups, sites, structures and properties, of which there are two, a few and 5.
Buildings

This includes the major home, finished in 1863 by Nisbet. Nisbet started
building in 1848 and lived in the log cabin for the duration of some of that time. The Greek Revival property is manufactured of a combination of limestone and weatherboard and sits on a concrete groundwork, it has an asphalt roof. The site’s other 4 “structures” had been all constructed appropriate just before the change of the 20th century and 1935. The earliest among these structures being erected pre-1900, a wooden gable roofed barn, of the English or Three Bay style. The other circa 1900 structure at the Nisbet Farm, also a barn, is a wood banked barn. Right after 1909 a tin roofed storage shed was built and in 1935 the last of the properties building’s was erected, a shingled ambigu corn crib.
Structures
Several of the remaining 5 attributes at the Nisbet Farm are categorized as structures on the Nationwide Sign-up of Historic Places listing.
Of these structures, only one particular was dated on the 1983 Sign-up Nomination Survey. The silo and silo shed have been developed in c. 1935, in accordance to that
document. The other two structures, a drinking water gravity and storage tank, and a windmill well, ended up not cited by date on the kind but are element of the Sign-up listing. The h2o gravity tank was made with stone walls.
